In the world of Dimentiara, monsters (known locally as “Kreatures”) are not the stuff of myth and legend, they are a part of everyday life. This is an archive of just some of the countless varieties that exist. New species are being created by science all the time, not to mention there are many wild Kreatures which have yet to have been discovered!

What defines a Kreature?

Kreatures are not a monophyletic clade; they are an evolutionary grade. Every Kreature has a nucleus that emits an invisible “nucleo-aura” composed of a mysterious substance called "K-matter" once they reach their adult size. A nucleo-aura is like a biological forcefield in a Kreature’s cells which spikes in response to duress, bonding them together at a microscopic level and making them impossible to separate. A Kreature can eventually regenerate from any injury as long as its nucleus is intact. Kreatures can have all sorts of incredible powers such as fire breath, lightning bolts, eye beams, telekinesis and so on but these abilities are best understood as expressions of their nucleo-auras rather than as magic.

All this taken together means that Kreatures are nigh indestructible and extremely powerful, necessitating the existence of professional Kreature Tamers to keep them in check so that civilization can function.

Kreature Metamorphosis

Some Kreatures are capable of metamorphosis. The next stage in its life cycle is known as a meta-form, and will often differ from its previous stage in terms of its size, powers and rank. Not every species has a meta-form, and unless the species actually needs to metamorphose to reproduce, most individuals are duds which can't change into their meta-form on their own. Fortunately, metamorphosis usually isn't necessary for a Kreature to reach adulthood. (An analogy can be made to neotenic salamanders like the axolotl; they have the latent ability to metamorphose, but since their larval form is reproductively capable they don't need to.)

All lab-grown Kreatures are specifically designed to be duds by default, but Tamers can purchase species-specific genetic patches that can trigger their latent ability to metamorphose. This allows novice Tamers a wider selection of low-ranking Kreatures to choose from without the risk of it metamorphosing into something they might not have the proper license to own.

What determines a Kreature's Rank?

In the interests of safety and fairness of competition, the Kreature Combat Federation classifies Kreatures according to the maximum level of power that species can achieve, with Rank D- being the lowest and Rank A+ being the highest. Therefore, Rank could be seen as analogous to weight classes in other combat sports such as Boxing or MMA. However, raw power isn't everything and even a low-ranking Kreature can have useful abilities in the greater context of a team battle, or defeat a higher-ranking Kreature if its Tamer utilizes good strategy and teamwork.

Rank D

The lowest ranking Kreatures, they tend to be small, inexpensive, and relatively easy to mindlink with, making them well suited for novice Tamers. They certainly aren't starved for choice either; most Kreatures are of this rank. Owning a Rank D doesn't require a license, though they can only be purchased by someone at least 18 years old. While these Kreatures might be somewhat lacking in strength, they should never be underestimated!

Rank C

These Kreatures set the standard for all others. Middle of the road in strength, expense, husbandry and trainability, their versatility makes them suitable for both moderately experienced beginners and veteran Tamers, and form the backbone of many teams. Although only a Lvl1 license is required to own a Rank C, most rookies cut their teeth on Rank D Kreatures and work their way up.

Rank B

These mighty beasts have power above and beyond the average Kreature. On top of being somewhat difficult to grow, their strong instincts, large size and demanding husbandry make them suitable for more experienced Tamers. A Level 2 licence is required to own one, which can only be obtained after acquiring a Level 1 license.

Rank A

The crème de la crème. The ultimate warriors. Rank A Kreatures are super weapons; apex predators; living, breathing forces of nature. Though they have incredible raw power, they are difficult to grow, expensive to care for, and have overwhelming instincts which only the most skilled and experienced Tamers can handle. A Lvl3 license is required to own one, which can only be obtained after acquiring a Lvl2 license.
